Scarpa Group Shot

how it all came to be: the story of scarpa

1994: Tonya Harding’s goons kneecap Nancy Kerrigan. Michael Jackson marries Lisa Marie Presley. O.J. Simpson leads L.A. police on a slo-mo car chase on national TV. Rebuffing the cultural insanity, shoe lover Amy Gardner opens Scarpa in Charlottesville, Virginia.

One of these things is not like the others.

Her motto then should be your motto now: "When the going gets tough, the tough buy Cordanis." Sure, that might sound like a luxury statement, but think again. Shoes instantly up the design quotient on any outfit. Shoes don’t care about your weight or your cup size. Shoes are always functional, so they simply can’t be an indulgence (right?). Shoes literally reset your foundation, whether it’s nutty celebrities or a bad trip to the dentist that rock your world.

We don’t have to tell you that you want the Calleen Corderos, Attilio Giusti Leombrunis, Gentle Soles, Luccheses, and Fiorentini & Bakers. You know you do. But you also want a shopping experience that’s smart, sassy, honest, and real.

Holding a degree in architecture from UVA, Amy knows craftsmanship when she sees it. She loves design. And with her unerring eye, she assembles shoes and accessories that make a sophisticated statement about how we live now. Browsing Scarpa’s shelves – and now, browsing Scarpa’s catalogue online – is like paging through a wonderful story about womanhood, friendship, and sly humor. You might not buy everything, but you won’t want to miss a word. For over 17 years, Scarpa has remained a richly hued novel in a tabloid world.

the people that make it all happen

amyamy: if you're not laughing and having fun, why bother?

Furry animal of choice:

Woof!

Guilty pleasure:

Being alone.

Favorite Scarpa memory:

Dolly Buswell buying a pair of Charles David black mules on day one, March 9, 1994. She was the first customer that day who I did not know personally prior to opening the store. Hence I was convinced that she was buying shoes because she liked them and not because she was taking pity on me.

First pair of grown-up shoes and how you scored them:

Am I a grown up?

What would you do for a Klondike Bar:

Nothing, but I would crawl on crushed glass for some gelato.

First concert/album:

First concert: The Cars, Richmond Coliseum. However, my second concert, U2, at The Hampton Coliseum burned with brighter stars. I still have a crush on Bono.  First album: Disney's The Jungle Book. And yes, I still know all the words.

Favorite Charlottesville hotspot:

Hands down, time after time, Mas

Fall Wish List:

new pair of fiorentini and baker boots in black (dare I try the 3 buckle this year?)
perfect black knit wrap dress from bell
gabrielle sanchez flyers (I've been wanting a pair for about 8 years but what color to get?)
new studded black calleen cordero belt
most amazing thickly knit sweater coat from christopher fischer.

joanjoan: "horses and shoes. little girl dreams do come true!"

Furry animal of choice:

A horse of course!

Guilty pleasure:

Laying in the sun.

Heels: the higher the better!

Favorite Scarpa memory:

I have two (after 6 years I am allowed).  Was working for CBS 19 and was able to score a meeting with Amy to discuss a TV ad.  Upon meeting, Amy asked if I would like to come work for her in Scarpa.  Well I think it has worked out pretty well.

The first time a customer got really excited about and bought a pair of shoes I picked out at market.

First pair of grown-up shoes and how you scored them:

High heel Ninas from Hofheimers for 10th grade Valentine's dance.  My beloved grandmother bought them for me despite the fact I could hardly walk in them.

What would you do for a Klondike Bar:

Not a fan...now coffee ice cream...

First concert/album:

First concert without a parent: The Police at William & Mary Hall.

First album I really remember: Ghosts in the Machine by The Police.

Fall Wish List:

Samira 13 black pearl on black suede cord!  So rich and unique!   Faliero Sarti scarves!  They are so soft and sumptuous: make the most simple dress or sweater completely unique. I have been thinking about the espresso suede, platform boot by Pons Quintana.   Brown is the color for footwear:  perfect with the taupe and grey prevalent in ready to wear this fall.
